The Territory festival is taking place for the second time and its goals and principles have remained the same. Territory is a place where there are no insurmountable boundaries between different genres of contemporary art, where there is no room for prejudice or false taboo. For some, the program may seem like a cultural mine field, for others it will be an amusement park full of engaging artistic adventures.

Territory is a teaching festival. We want to see our young people well educated, inquisitive, competent and open to the world, but we also want them to have first hand knowledge of the most interesting occurrences and tendencies in contemporary culture. Just like a year ago, along with Muscovites, the audience will be made up of acting students from large Russian cities. For them Territory 2007 will be more than productions by Romeo Castellucci and Alain Platel, Aleksey Ratmansky and Tero Saarinen, concerts and poetry nights, but also master classes given by outstanding choreographers and theatre and film directors. And during the last evening of the festival the students will inadvertently become its participants, by taking the stage in Mysterion concert.

This year we also acquired the Headquarters — the State Theatre of Nations. Here you will always be able to get the information that you need, meet festival participants and guests, watch a movie, and listen to music. Our festival is a territory of communication and dialogue among different generations of artists for whom art is not a tranquil museum space, but rather a process of searching for new language, new themes, and new meanings.

Body in the City became the theme of this year's festival. We know that life in a contemporary megapolis often leads to psychological trauma, and even to loss of one's individuality. On the other hand, today's big city is a place where you can become quite accomplished, where you can discover possibilities unfathomed before. The individual?s struggle with circumstances, the resistance to an aggressive environment, physical and not just philosophical and social awareness of you as a part of the post-industrial civilization are becoming some of the most relevant themes in contemporary art. And that means that they are becoming relevant themes for our festival, for the Territory festival is about art that is created here and now.
